What is Baptism?
Baptism is a really special moment in a Jesus followers journey. This is a sacred and beautiful opportunity to declare, “I believe the best possible way to live is the way of Jesus, and I am committed to following Christ—daily dying to myself and allowing the resurrected Christ to live in and through me.”
Normally baptism takes place by fully being imersed in water, in one of our worship services. For Christians it signifies the end of our old life (living how we want to live) and of being born again into a brand new life where we place Jesus in charge. Its us repenting (turning) from the life we have lived and being washed clean for a new life with a new direction. This is all connected in with how Jesus died and then rose again so that we could have this new life. As a guy called Paul says in the Bible, ‘That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land! That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country.’ (Romans 6:3,4)
